BAE Systems has announced a significant £220 million investment to transform its facilities in Rochester, Kent, creating a state-of-the-art, 32,000-square-metre advanced factory. This ambitious redevelopment is set to elevate BAE’s UK-based Electronic Systems business, positioning the site for greater efficiency and sustainability.
The upgraded facility will integrate manufacturing, engineering, and office spaces, supporting the development of sophisticated aerospace technology. Key products include head-up displays, helmet-mounted systems, flight control computers, and active control sticks—critical components for both civil and military aircraft worldwide. Additionally, Rochester’s operations play a vital role in providing year-round support for commercial airliners, highlighting its global significance.
Boosting Talent and Economic Growth
This redevelopment will create 300 new jobs over the next five years, enhancing the skilled workforce in the Medway area. “Our skilled workforce plays a vital role in delivering products essential to national security and commercial aviation,” said Dave Banks, BAE Systems’ Rochester Business Centre Director. “This investment will enable us to attract even more highly skilled talent, allowing us to better serve customers who rely on our products.”
Beyond job creation, the investment is expected to strengthen the local economy.
Councillor Vince Maple, Leader of Medway Council, emphasized the positive impact, stating, “This development will not only support local economic growth but also create skilled employment opportunities, develop young talent, and encourage further investment in Medway.”

Rochester’s redevelopment is part of BAE Systems’ wider investment strategy, which includes a £300 million upgrade to shipbuilding facilities in Glasgow and over £200 million dedicated to modernizing the UK munitions sector. These projects collectively underscore BAE Systems’ commitment to enhancing the UK’s defense and aerospace capabilities.
Work on the Rochester site is already underway, with full-scale redevelopment planned for 2025. In addition to the factory upgrade, enhancements to utilities, office spaces, and parking facilities are part of the project, aiming to provide a modern, efficient working environment for the site’s existing 1,600 employees.
