Brief

Our client, a large consumer goods manufacturer in the UK, engaged us to support a critical hiring initiative. The company, which was a smaller player in the industry and lacked a well-established brand, needed to fill nine key engineering roles. These included Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, Maintenance Engineers, a Controls Engineer, and a Facilities Engineer. The need for specialized talent was urgent, and the company faced significant challenges in attracting the right candidates due to its remote location, high cost of living in the area, and the limited salary offerings.

Challenges

The project faced multiple hurdles:

  • Specialized Skill Shortage: The local market had a shortage of professionals with the necessary technical expertise, particularly in electrical and mechanical engineering.

  • Brand Awareness: As a smaller, lesser-known company, the client struggled to convey the stability and growth opportunities that would attract candidates from more prominent companies.

  • Cost of Living: The high cost of living in the area, coupled with the constrained salary offerings, deterred many candidates from relocating or commuting.

  • Remote Location: The company's location was remote, making it less appealing for potential hires who would have to relocate.

Our Process

We implemented a multi-pronged approach to meet the client’s needs:

  • Deep Market Search: We conducted a thorough market search, leveraging our extensive network and industry knowledge to identify candidates with the required technical skills and an openness to working within the company’s salary constraints.

  • Addressing Cost of Living: We focused on candidates from high-cost areas or those with personal circumstances that made them more flexible regarding salary expectations. We made sure that they understood the cost of living challenges and crafted realistic expectations around compensation.

  • Crafting a Strong Employer Proposition: We worked closely with the client to build a compelling narrative that emphasized the unique opportunities available at the company, including the chance to influence and shape the company’s future in a smaller, dynamic environment.

Results

Within just 3 months, we successfully completed all nine hires, accelerating the recruitment timeline. These included placements for:

  • Electrical Engineers

  • Mechanical Engineers

  • Maintenance Engineers

  • Controls Engineer

  • Facilities Engineer

The project had several additional positive outcomes:

  • The recruitment process was significantly accelerated, ensuring that the skill gap was closed in a timely manner.

  • The hiring of specialized talent contributed to boosting the development of the junior team, helping bridge the experience gap and enhance their capabilities.

  • The company's culture and brand reputation improved, allowing them to access a higher caliber of talent for future roles.

This case study demonstrates our ability to deliver highly skilled talent quickly, even in challenging markets with specific needs. Our tailored approach ensured the client could meet their operational and strategic goals in a timely manner.
